tzedakah

צדקה
Pronounced: tsuh-dah-KAH or tsuh-DAW-kuh
Hebrew, from the word "tzedek," (justice, righteousness, fairness)
Tzedakah is often used as a synonym for "charity," but this is a limited interpretation. It is not a spontaneous gift, but an obligation as one of the 613 mitzvot (commandments). Taking action for justice comes in many forms, and sharing resources is considered just one of the ways in which we are obligated to participate in and support our communities.
Mutual aid
Mutual aid is a concept from organizational theory of "voluntary reciprocal exchange of resources and services for mutual benefit." It is the cooperative practice of communities supporting themselves, with the motto "solidarity, not charity." It is a community response to society's needs, with participants giving what they are able to and receiving what they need. There are mutual aid projects around the US and the world fighting hunger, poverty, and other forms of economic and racial oppression.
To learn more about mutual aid, you can check out this toolkit created by US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Supporting mutual aid projects is a form of active participation in Tzedakah. Do you know what sorts of mutual aid projects are happening in your area? Can you join in with those efforts, by sharing material resources, time, or spreading the word?
Listed below are a number of mutual aid networks and other justice-oriented organizations that are currently welcoming financial support. Know of a resource that should be included in this list? Email us about it!
